June 18th, 8pm St Mary's Church with: Stephen Nunn, author, Barrie Jaimeson, actor, Colin Baldy, baritone, Christopher Weston, piano In 2009, local historian, Stephen Nunn, published his book, Maldon and Heybridge in the Great War. In it, he examines the character of Maldon at the outbreak of the First World War and looks at the impact on the inhabitants as a result of a Zeppelin raid in 1915. He also outlines the activities of the Royal Flying Corps at nearby Goldhanger aerodrome and the secret work of the Navy on Osea Island. There are detailed stories about the impact of war on two local families at either end of the social spectrum – the Granthams of Beeleigh Abbey and the Lasts of Gate Street.
Stephen Nunn was born and grew up in Maldon. His family lived in Gate Street and, like most families in the UK, were personally affected by the events of the Great War. A prominent local historian, Stephen is a leading member of Maldon Archeological and Historical Group and has written about the local house, Edwin’s Hall, as well as a variety of books on Maldon and district in both world wars.
